Using Sections in Onboarding Templates
Whether you're collecting contact details, safety credentials, or compliance documents, finding and adding the right templates to new onboarding workflow shouldn't feel like searching for a needle in a haystack.
The Sectionname is a property of the onboarding template allowing you to group that template in a ‘section’ of related templates.
Later you can either add individual onboarding step templates to your own section, or add the entire section. If you add the entire section WorkZerk will use the Section Name for the new Section.
What Are Sections?
A Section is an optional label you can assign to any onboarding template. Templates that share the same Section Name are automatically grouped together in a collapsible section, making it easy to see which templates belong together at a glance.
Think of sections like folders for your templates. You might create sections such as:
Contact Details — containing templates for first name, surname, phone number, email address, and postal address
Safety Credentials — grouping your White Card, First Aid Certificate, and PPE Requirements templates
Employment Documents — bundling tax file declaration, superannuation choice, and bank details templates
Site Induction — combining all the forms and acknowledgements needed for a complete site induction
Why Use Sections?
Faster Template Selection
When you're building an onboarding workflow, you can add the entire section at once. All templates within that section are automatically added in the correct order — no need to hunt through a long list selecting templates one by one.
Consistent Ordering
Each template within a section has a defined order. When you add a template to a section, templates are always added in the same sequence. This ensures your onboarding flows are consistent every time, with no risk of steps appearing in the wrong order.
Cleaner Template Library
Instead of scrolling through a flat list of templates, your library is organised into logical, collapsible groups. Expand the sections you need, collapse the ones you don't. Each section header shows a count of how many templates it contains, giving you a quick overview of your template library at a glance.
Easy Reorganisation
Need to change the order of templates within a section? Simply click the reorder icon next to the section name and drag templates into your preferred sequence. Changes are saved instantly and apply everywhere that section is added in the future.
For existing Workflow you can still override the default order on onboarding step templates, so changing the section order will not affect existing workflows.
How to Use Section Names
Assigning a Section Name to a Template
When creating or editing an onboarding template, you'll find the Section Name field. Simply type a name for your section — for example, "Contact Details" or "Safety Credentials".
Once you type a new Section name you will see it appear in the drop down list, just click on it to set the Section name.
If you want to add a template to an existing section, start typing the first few letters of the section name and it will appear in the drop down.
Templates without a Section Name appear under a "No Section" group, so you can still use ungrouped templates alongside your organised sections.
Viewing Your Grouped Templates
Navigate to your onboarding step templates, and you'll see your templates organised by section. Each section appears as a collapsible row with:
A folder icon indicating it's a grouped section
The section name
A count badge showing how many onboarding step templates are in the section
A reorder icon for adjusting the template sequence
Click the arrow to expand or collapse any section and see the templates within.
Selecting an Entire Section into a Blank Section
When adding templates to a blank or existing section, simply tick the checkbox next to the section header. This automatically selects all templates within that section. Click Add to Section and the entire section of templates is added in the correct order.
This is particularly useful when you have standard groupings you use repeatedly — add your entire "Contact Details" section with one click instead of selecting five or six individual templates.
Selecting an Entire Section to Add Into Workflow
You can also add an entire section at once into your onboarding workflow. Click on the ADD SECTION button in the group header of the section. WorkZerk will create a new onboarding workflow section using that Section name together with all the onboarding step templates (in the right order).
Reordering Templates Within a Section
Click the reorder icon next to any section name to open the reorder dialog. From here, you can drag and drop templates into your preferred sequence. Click Save to confirm your changes.
The order you set here determines the sequence templates appear when you add the section to an onboarding workflow. Get your order right once, and it's consistent everywhere.
Practical Examples
Example 1: Employee Onboarding
Create a section called "New Starter Details" containing:
First Name
Surname
Date of Birth
Phone Number
Email Address
Emergency Contact
Postal Address
Now, every time you onboard a new employee, select the "New Starter Details" section and all seven steps are added in the correct order with a single click.
Example 2: Contractor Compliance
Create a section called "Construction Credentials" containing:
White Card (General Construction Induction)
First Aid Certificate
Working at Heights Certificate
Asbestos Awareness Certificate
Public Liability Insurance
When contractors register for your site, add the entire compliance section to ensure nothing is missed.
Example 3: Multi-Section Forms
For longer onboarding processes, you might create multiple sections:
"Personal Information" — name, contact details, emergency contact
"Employment Details" — position, department, start date, manager
"Compliance Documents" — police check, working with children, qualifications
"Acknowledgements" — code of conduct, privacy policy, workplace health and safety
Each section of your onboarding form can pull from the appropriate section, keeping your workflow organised and your forms consistent.
Tips for Effective Section Organisation
Be consistent with naming. Use the same section name exactly across all templates you want grouped together. "Contact Details" and "Contact details" would create two separate sections (not good).
Keep sections focused. Group templates that genuinely belong together and are typically used as a set. If you find yourself frequently selecting only some templates from a section, consider splitting it into smaller, more focused groups.
Use descriptive names. Choose section names that clearly describe the contents. Future you (and your team) will thank you when navigating a library with dozens of templates.
Review and refine. As your template library grows, periodically review your sections. Consolidate similar groups, split oversized sections, and archive templates you no longer use.
